What is ILS?

Independent Living Skills (ILS) is an in-home service focused on helping you build the daily routines, practical abilities, and decision-making skills needed to increase independence, confidence, and long-term self-sufficiency — all within the comfort of your own home.

Who ILS is For?

This service is a strong fit for individuals who benefit from hands-on coaching inside the home environment and are working toward greater independence in daily routines, responsibilities, communication, and decision-making. ILS supports long-term growth through structured practice and consistent guidance.

  • Age range: Typically 18+, with supports adapted to the person’s needs and learning style
  • You want support building daily living skills (not just someone doing things for you)
  • You benefit from hands-on coaching and step-by-step practice
  • Your goals are mostly in the home (routines, chores, hygiene, meals, organization)
  • You want help building consistency and independence
  • You receive services through California’s Self-Determination Program (SDP) or another approved funding path

What skills can ILS work on?

ILS focuses on building practical, everyday life skills inside the home. Below are examples of common goal areas we support — always personalized to the individual’s needs, pace, and long-term independence goals.

Hands-on coaching in daily tasks like dishwashing and kitchen cleanup builds independence that lasts.

  • Daily routines & Hygiene
    Morning and evening routines, hygiene steps, laundry systems, and building independence over time.
  • Home Organization & Responsibilities
    Cleaning routines, room organization, simple checklists, learning how to maintain shared spaces.
  • Meal Prep & Kitchen Safety
    Basic cooking skills, meal planning, safe food handling, using appliances safely, cleaning up after.
  • Money Basics & Decision-Making
    Budgeting practice, identifying needs vs wants, simple spending plans, learning to plan ahead.
  • Communication & Self-Advocacy at Home
    Asking for help appropriately, expressing preferences, practicing calm communication and problem-solving.
  • Safety Skills
    Home safety, boundaries, stranger safety, online safety basics, and learning safe choices.
