Starting services can feel overwhelming, and asking the right questions makes all the difference.

Adaptive Skills Training should be practical, personalized, and rooted in real life. Before getting started, these are a few important questions we always encourage families to ask.

Practice is where learning turns into real life.

Whether it’s writing, communication, routines, or daily tasks, consistent practice helps skills stick and confidence grow. Progress doesn’t come from rushing. It comes from showing up, trying again, and being supported along the way.

Real skills are built one moment at a time.

What skills matter most can look different at every stage of life.

For some families, it’s communication. For others, it might be daily routines, social connection, or independence in the community.

And the truth is, those priorities can shift over time — and that’s okay.

Support doesn’t look the same for everyone.

For some families, it’s help building daily routines.

For others, it’s learning new skills, gaining confidence, or feeling more independent in the community.

Frequently Asked Questions.

How is SDP different from traditional services?2025-07-14T15:16:59-07:00

Great question! While both options provide support through your Regional Center, there are some key differences in how services are chosen and managed.

Here’s a simple comparison:

Traditional Services (Standard Regional Center Option):

  • Providers are assigned from a pre-approved (vendored) list

  • The Regional Center leads your planning meetings and makes most service decisions

  • You follow a set list of services and guidelines

  • The budget is managed by the Regional Center

  • You have less flexibility to create custom supports

Self-Determination Program (SDP):

  • You choose your providers — including people not vendored with the Regional Center

  • You create a Person-Centered Plan (PCP) based on your life goals

  • Services are more flexible and tailored to what you truly want

  • You control how your budget is used (with the help of an FMS)

  • You and your team make the decisions — not the Regional Center

What’s The Difference Between ILS and CIS?2026-02-16T22:52:27-08:00

ILS focuses on skill-building in the home. CIS is designed for skill-building in the community.

Do You Work With Children and Adults?2026-02-16T22:51:30-08:00

ILS services are primarily designed for adults 18 and older who are working toward greater independence in their daily lives. If the individual is under 18 and needs skill-building support, AST may be a more appropriate service.

How Many Hours Per Week Do People Usually Start With?2026-02-16T22:49:58-08:00

It varies, but many families start with a consistent weekly schedule that supports routine-building and progress.

Do You Help with Challenging Behaviors?2026-02-16T22:49:14-08:00

We can support skill-building and routines that reduce frustration and increase independence. If specialized behavioral support is needed, we collaborate with the team and follow the participant’s plan.

How Do We Get Started?2026-02-16T22:48:39-08:00

Submit the Interest Form and we’ll reach out to learn more about your goals and next steps.

Where do AST services take place?2026-02-15T07:44:57-08:00

Services may take place in the home or in community settings, depending on goals, safety considerations, and the approved service plan.

How are goals developed?2026-02-15T07:44:24-08:00

Goals are developed through intake assessment, review of existing documentation (such as IPP), and collaboration with the participant and their support team. Objectives are structured and measurable.

Do services require Regional Center approval?2026-02-15T07:44:04-08:00

If funded through Regional Center or the Self-Determination Program, AST must align with the participant’s IPP and approved service plan. Private-pay services do not require Regional Center approval.

How is progress monitored?2026-02-15T07:43:32-08:00

Progress is reviewed regularly through observation, documentation, and team collaboration to ensure services remain aligned with meaningful outcomes.

Is AST supervision or respite care?2026-02-15T07:43:05-08:00

No. AST is focused on structured skill development. Services are designed to teach and reinforce independence rather than provide unstructured supervision.

Is AST the same as ABA?2026-02-15T07:41:33-08:00

AST focuses on practical life skills and independence within daily routines. While structured teaching strategies may be used, AST is designed specifically around functional skill development and real-world application.

What ages do you serve?2026-02-15T07:33:58-08:00

We provide AST services for individuals ages 7 and older. Services are tailored to developmental level and individualized goals rather than age alone.

What is Adaptive Skills Training (AST)?2026-02-15T07:28:28-08:00

AST is structured, goal-based support designed to strengthen everyday skills such as communication, daily routines, organization, community participation, and decision-making. Services focus on building independence through guided instruction and real-life practice.

What is the Self-Determination Program (SDP)?2025-07-14T14:19:01-07:00

The Self-Determination Program (SDP) is a way for you to have more control over your services and support. Instead of being assigned providers, you get to:

  • Choose who supports you

  • Build a plan based on your goals

  • Decide how your Regional Center budget is used

At Adaptive SDP, we help guide families through this process and create customized supports that work for them.

Can we choose what services we want from Adaptive SDP?2025-07-14T15:09:33-07:00

Yes! One of the best parts of the Self-Determination Program is the flexibility to choose what works for you. We’ll:

  • Review your goals during intake

  • Help match you with the right support team

  • Create a plan that can grow and evolve over time

You’re in control — we’re here to help make it happen.

Can you give an example of how you support a participant?2025-07-14T15:06:22-07:00

Absolutely. Here’s a sample scenario:

Owen is a 21-year-old who recently exited school services. He’s nonverbal, has mobility challenges, and needs help with daily routines. His family is focused on building independence and community engagement. We provide in-home life skills training (like meal prep and hygiene routines), adaptive fitness, and weekly community outings to local libraries, parks, and stores. Our staff use gestures and visual supports to help Owen communicate and build consistency.

Every plan is different — but just like Owen, we’ll build services around what matters most to him.

Can Adaptive SDP support nonverbal individuals or those with higher support needs?2025-07-14T15:05:21-07:00

Yes — we have experience supporting individuals with a wide range of needs, including:

  • Nonverbal communication

  • Mobility challenges

  • Behavioral supports

  • Complex care or medical concerns (in collaboration with families)

We’ll work with you to build a team and plan that’s safe, respectful, and empowering.

What ages does Adaptive SDP work with?2025-07-14T15:02:08-07:00

We support individuals of all ages — from children to teens to adults. We tailor our services based on:

  • Age

  • Developmental stage

  • Personal goals and learning style

We’ll work with you to make sure the services we offer are appropriate and meaningful for your loved one’s needs.

Where does Adaptive SDP provide services?2025-07-14T14:59:21-07:00

We currently serve families across several Regional Centers in California, including:

  • ELARC

  • Lanterman

  • Harbor

  • Inland

  • North LA County

  • Orange County

  • San Gabriel/Pomona

If you’re not sure which Regional Center you’re part of, we can help you find out.

How long does it take to get started?2025-07-14T14:38:11-07:00

It depends on where you are in the process:

  • If you’re not yet in SDP, it may take a few weeks while your plan and budget are approved.

  • If you’re already approved, we can usually begin onboarding in just a few days.

We’ll guide you through:

  • Intake and planning

  • Starting services based on your schedule

Do I need an Independent Facilitator (IF) to work with Adaptive SDP?2025-07-14T14:34:50-07:00

No, you can start with us even if you don’t have an IF yet.

If you already have one:

  • We’ll collaborate with them

  • We’ll stay in communication as your services begin

If you don’t have one:

💡 IFs help guide the planning and budget setup during your transition into SDP.

Do I lose my current services if I join?2025-07-14T14:33:31-07:00

No, you don’t lose anything automatically. Many families:

  • Keep current services during the transition

  • Replace or add new supports as needed

  • Take it one step at a time

We’ll help you understand how the transition works and what makes sense for your situation.

How do I begin services with Adaptive SDP?2025-07-14T14:44:12-07:00

Here’s how it works:

  • Fill out our Interest Form

  • We’ll reach out to learn more about your needs

  • We’ll explain the next steps and begin the intake process

  • We’ll help you build a personalized care plan

Whether you’re new to SDP or already enrolled, we’ll guide you through every step.

What’s the benefit of being in the SDP?2025-07-14T14:28:51-07:00

With the SDP, you can:

  • Pick your own support staff

  • Design a plan that fits your life

  • Control how your budget is used

  • Create services based on what matters most to you
